    • We have a time scheduled when Wikidata will be read-only for a database migration. The window for that is Feb 20 19:00 to Feb 21 2:00 UTC.
    • New features and bugfixes on Wikidata are planned to be deployed on Monday (Feb 18). This should among other things include:
      • Showing useful diffs for edits of claims (they’re currently empty)
      • Automatic comments for editing of claims (there are currently none)
      • Ability to add items to claims by their ID
      • Better handling of deleted properties
      • More results in the entity selector (that’s the thing that lets you select properties, items and so on) so you can add everything and not just the first few matches that are shown
    • We’re still working on the issue that sometimes editing of certain parts of items or properties isn’t possible. If you’re running into it try to reload the page and/or change the URL to the www. version or the non-www. version respectively.
    • Deployment on all other Wikipedias is currently planned for March 6 (a note to the Village Pumps of all affected projects will follow soon)

MacDonald P. Jackson

Hi Stuart - I messed up the de-prod for this article somehow, so it is not showing on the NZ page. But I thought I would let you know that I managed to do some investigation and work on him. Jackson is a notable academic and easily crossed the threshold. You have to head into some fairly specialized websites to find much about him, but in his field he is considered an international expert. Keep up the good work. Biographical stubs from Dictionary of New Zealand Biography

Just a head's up, BunyipMan (talk · contribs) appears to have just bulk-CSD nominated a set of articles you creating using the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography as a source. I think there's enough there to invite a full discussion at WP:AfD, since the dictionary contains "Many of these people were included because detailed accounts of their lives were readily available, in archives, academic studies and official histories" (source), which suggests possible notability. However, I can't in good conscience see them getting in kept via an AfD with just a single source, so it might be worth having a look to see what else is out there relating to these subjects. New Zealand bios

Hi Stuart. A rash of your articles have been put up for speedy deletion today, under criterion A7. Most, if not all, of these are single-sentence stubs taken from the Te Ara Dictionary of New Zealand Biography entries, but an entry therein doesn't constitute an indication of significance, and given the brevity of the pages concerned, I'm having a hard time finding a good reason to decline the CSD tags - to take Samuel Henry Drew as a random example, nothing on that page suggests he was any more notable than, for example, me. If you'd mentioned his large collection of biological specimens, or his effective founding of the Wanganui Museum then that would at least have been the necessary claim to importance that A7 requires. Even then, I've severe doubts of that particular article's suitibility; having searched for additional sources to shore it up I've come to the conclusion that it wouldn't survive an AFD.
What I'm getting at is that if you're going to try and expand Wikipedia's biographical coverage of New Zealand - which is a worthy goal - please take the time to create articles that at least meet our most basic inclusion requirements. Two independent sources and some indication of importance is really all you need to provide, then you can carry on to the next one. As it is, I'm going to work through the listed articles now and deal with them on a case-by-case basis; if I can find an excuse to keep them I will, but a lot of them may well be gone in the next hour or so; for that, my apologies. I considered that on seeing your comment above, but given the sheer volume of pages in question, and the fact that each one would have to be separately assessed, I'm not sure AFD's the way forward. IMHO, it would make more sense to run them through CSD first and then follow up with AFD for those that need further discussion. That said, I'm now giving serious consideration to bulk-speedying the lot; not one that I've looked at so far makes a claim to importance, and although I just declined the speedy on Ranulph Dacre, it's taken me nearly twenty minutes to dig up one decent additional source. Moot point: User:Vejvančický has blanket-removed all the CSD tags. Can't say that I agree with that course of action, but it saves me a bunch of work so I'm not going to complain. I came here to say that I was luckier, the ones I looked at were quickly sourceable. I'd appreciate it if you'd give time for Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Nellikunnu Muhyaddin Juma Masjid. I've left messages at en.wp Islam and ml.wp to try and get sources. It's just not conceivable that there aren't sources for a saint d.1962 with an active following, the problem is in the wild variations of English mispelling, saint-names and so on. Somewhere at the bottom is a real person who if we don't pin him down now will just come back as new badly translated articles later. In ictu oculi (talk) 15:29, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

Stuart should be showered in barnstars for the work that he has done on the DNZB database. With the exception of maybe a dozen people, the 3,000 or so entries that the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography holds are there because of what us Wikipedians define as notability. It's incredibly valuable to have all these stubs sitting there, because if you are working on something and another notable New Zealander is involved, chances are that there's already an article to link to because of Stuart's good work. And if you look again at Samuel Henry Drew, who was referred to above, maybe you'll see how easy it is to add a few sentences to the article that demonstrate notability within the article. It's generally not hard to realise a person's notability if you look at their DNZB entry. For what it's worth, the DNZB bios are published under Creative Commons 3.0 N-C, and I have started a discussion with them whether they would consider revoking the non-commercial part of the licence, so that Wikipedia can make full use of the bio texts. I see two problems here. The first is, you really shouldn't base an article on a single source, though I appreciate for historical subjects, that can be problematic. The second is - where is the discussion where consensus has unambiguously shown that the DNZB can generally be trusted to establish notability of an article's subject? I have to say that the article on it stating it included "a range of ordinary people" concerns me a bit. Remember that AfD is a discussion first and foremost. The official website of the New Zealand Government claims that people listed in the DNZB "have helped shape our country", and it is apparent when I read DNZB entries. Moreover, their articles usually contain a list of other independent sources and external links. Stuart, some of your points are correct and justified, but I have to remind you that several editors have complained and notified you about deficiencies in your articles in the past, mainly about insufficient explanation of notability of the subjects of your articles. You can see that the articles still confuse others and the insufficient explanation of importance is the main reason of this repeating situation (I mean mass CSD nominations). You should build your articles with better care and always explain properly why are those people important for NZ history also here on Wikipedia. Please, note that I speak as someone who repeatedly defended your articles; I do it because I believe your work is honest and beneficial to this project. I'd like to second Vejvančický's commendation of your work: I apologise sincerely if I gave the impression that I disapproved of your creation of these articles per se.
You ask above for feedback on avoiding these issues in the future. The fundamental problem that I see here is that the stubs you are creating not only fail Wikipedia's basic notability requirements, they also for the most part don't offer any indication that the subjects are siginificant. To use the Samuel Henry Drew article as an example again, before Schwede66's excellent expansion of the page, all that was there was this - a two sentence paragraph that offers no explanation as to why Drew is any more worthy of note than other watchmakers and/or naturalists. Neither of these professions are inherently noteworthy, so there's nothing there to indicate that we ought to have a page about the man.
In terms of avoiding the problem, you have two avenues of approach. One is to add information from the DNZB that indicates the significance of the subject - why they are more encyclopedia-worthy than their peers. I would say myself that just being included in the DNZB is not in itself a sufficient indicator, but others evidently disagree; there's a discussion to be had around that.
The other, and to my mind preferable, approach is to add more sources. Notability on Wikipedia is (as you know) defined as "significant coverage in multiple reliable independent sources", so one additional source per article would suffice to meet that requirement.
Once again, I'm not saying that we don't want or need articles on these people, nor that your efforts aren't appreciated - and I'm sorry if I gave a different impression. All I'm trying to point out is that the process will be smoother and less awkward if such articles are created with Wikipedia's inclusion requirements in mind. No-one's asking you to create a GA from scratch in a single edit, just that the pages you create pass the GNG or similar guidelines.
(As a minor aside, it looks like User:BunyipMan has been blocked as a sockpuppet, so at least you have no more worries from that quarter). Yunshui  10:20, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

Autopatrolled

Hi Stuart. Given the above issues I'm thinking it might be a good idea to remove the autopatrolled flag from your account, at least temporarily. This isn't intended as a comment on your editing (although I accept that it might come across as such), more a concern that if you're going to churn out large numbers of one-line, single-source stubs then it would benefit Wikipedia to have NPP check them and potentially expand them. I'd rather not simply revoke the flag unilaterally, though, so I'd like to hear your thoughts first. Cheers, Yunshui  15:06, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

Ah, if having articles AfDed is the criterion for having autopatroll rights revoked, I better put my hand up. Article number 14 that I created (of the well over 200 articles by now) has just been merged into a parent article because it didn't meet notability criteria, something that I wasn't aware of at the time, but I certainly supported the AfD when it got nominated. Deletion or otherwise of articles isn't my concern here. My thinking is that short, potentially non-notable stubs which could be expanded warrant the attention of NPP, who can then add sources and/or expand the articles. If NPP is bypassed, no-one gets to look over these articles, meaning that they remain single sentence stubs. Aside from bragging rights, autopatrolled confers no actual benefit to the user that has it, so I don't see that removing it inconveniences you, and see no reason to apologise for suggesting it - my interest is in allowing such articles to be improved, not in removing userrights as any sort of punishment. However, I'm hoping that you'll take on board the suggestions made by Ritchie333, Vejvančický and myself in the sections above, and that such a removal of userrights won't be necessary anyway. Hi Stuartyeates - just a little heads-up about this edit. Yes, the obituary was published in the print edition of the Otago Daily Times - but it was written by Peter Entwisle, i.e., User:Peter Entwisle, who is the wikieditor who tried to add it into the article (he's a good writer, but isn't that savvy on how to expand Wikipedia articles). Since obits are written freelance, it will be Peter's copyright, so it's fine to add it in. However it does feel like a textdump leaving it in as is. I've put a few small scraps of it into the article, but anything else from it can be acceptably added in too.     • Rolled out new code on wikidata.org. The new stuff you probably care about is:
      • Improved references. They can now have multiple lines. This should make references much more useful. You can now have one reference with for example values for each of the properties "book", "author", "page" to describe one source.
      • Fixed the prev/next links in diff view (bugzilla:45821)
      • d:Special:EntitiesWithoutLabel now lets you filter by language and entity type
    • Widget to add language links on the Wikipedias directly: added setting to enable/disable it per wiki and made it available for logged-in users only
    • Widget to add language links on the Wikipedias directly: improved layout / size
    • Made it so that the “edit links” link on Wikipedia is also shown when the corresponding item only has a link to this one language and no other languages
    • Submitted improved Apache config patch to make wikidata.org always redirect to www.wikidata.org, which is awaiting code review and deployment.
    • Improved the script that is responsible for taking Wikidata changes to the Wikipedias
    • Added a few ways to better debug the script responsible for taking Wikidata changes to the Wikipedias. This should help with investigating why some changes take way to long to show up on the Wikipedias.
    • Started work on automatically adding edited items to the user’s watchlist (according to preferences)
    • Finished script for rebuilding search keys, so we can finally get case insensitive matches in a lot of places

This lets you choose between “custom value”, “unknown value” and “no value”. “No value” means that we know that the given property has no value, e.g. Elizabeth I of England had no spouse. “Unknown value” means that the property has a value, but it is unknown which one -- e.g. Pope Linus most certainly had a year of birth, but it is unknown to us.

The Wikipedia Education Program is a relatively new program that is continuing to experience change and transition. Our goal is to be better than we were yesterday. For this reason, please remember to check the education noticeboard often. If you have any questions, please contact myself or one of your fellow Ambassadors.

Please complete the following, as soon as possible
  1. Create your Online Ambassador profile.
    If that page is not accessible to you, it means you don't have the online volunteer user right yet. Request it here.
    Leave "Publicly list me as Online Ambassador" checked to have your profile appear in the list of active Online Ambassadors.
  2. Read and review the Wikipedia Ambassadors Principles;
  3. If you haven't done so, browse the training for Ambassadors.
    Much of the training material is primarily intended for new Campus Ambassadors who are not experienced Wikipedians. But this introductory material is also used in the training for students and instructors, so you may want to go through it to familiarize yourself with what those users will have seen.
    If you see ways to improve the training, please edit it!
  4. Browse the list of current courses, and add yourself as an Online Ambassador on the course page for any you would like to help with.
    Be sure to introduce yourself to each instructor to let her/him know you've volunteered.
  5. Sign up for the Wikipedia Ambassador Program announcements email list.
    This is a very low traffic list for major announcements related to the Wikipedia Education Program program.

Support Structure

Online Ambassadors serve as a vital link in the Wikipedia Education Program, assisting new student editors transition into the Wikipedia editing community. They serve in a leadership role alongside the course instructor; local Campus Ambassador(s), who work with the class in person; and the Regional Ambassador, who checks in periodically with the course to make sure everything is going well. Together, the instructor, Campus Ambassador, Regional Ambassador, and Online Ambassador encompass the course "pod".

The pod is the term we use to refer to the group of individuals that work together to help the students in a particular course successfully contribute to Wikipedia. A prototypical pod might look something like this:

  • A professor or course instructor who is fairly new to Wikipedia, leading a class of 20–30 students, who have been assigned to make significant contributions to new or existing articles related to the course subject.
  • Two Campus Ambassadors, one of whom is an experienced Wikipedian and one of whom is new to the encyclopedia. The Campus Ambassadors are provided with training to learn the basic policies and guidelines of Wikipedia and how to help students contribute effectively.
  • Two Online Ambassadors, one of whom is a moderately experienced Wikipedian, while the other is very experienced. Both have knowledge of community policies and guidelines and are available to provide editing guidance, answer questions, and assistance navigating the community. When needed, Online Ambassadors are also available for one-on-one mentorship.
  • One Regional Ambassador, a moderately experienced Wikipedian who coordinates assistance and support for universities and courses based on a large geographical region.

Role and Responsibilities

The list of the responsibilities of the Online Ambassador are presented in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). In essence, the role of the Online Ambassador includes:

  1. Helping students in your class(es) when they ask for it and answer their questions;
  2. Serve as a liaison between the professor/student and the community;
  3. In general, keep an eye out for the students and professors and help them navigate the community;
  4. Helping students get feedback on their work (whether from you or other editors with an interest in or knowledge of the subject area)
  5. Be a good example for students, modeling good faith communication and editing practices; and
  6. Communicating regularly with the other members of your pod regarding the progress of the student, along with any issues that come up.

Online Ambassadors can also assist students that are outside of their pod. Generally, Online Ambassadors represent the Ambassador Program and provide assistance for students whenever encountered. While feedback on the style and formatting of student articles is essential, assistance may also be needed to review the articles substance and content. When needed, the Online Ambassador may request the assistance of WikiProjects that focus on technical issues presented in student articles.

Communication Channels

There are three main places for news, updates, and discussion about Wikipedia Ambassadors and the Wikipedia Education Program:

  1. Wikipedia:Education noticeboard
  2. The Wikipedia Ambassador Program announcements list. This is a low-traffic email list that is used for significant announcements that are relevant to the whole program. Please sign up as soon as you get a chance.
  3. Internet Relay Chat (IRC). If you use IRC, please consider adding #wikipedia-en-ambassadors to your channel lineup.

Future communication tools are being developed. Newsletters about the program or messages for Online Ambassadors may occasionally be delivered to your talk page. If you have any questions, please let me know.

    • We worked on reducing the time it takes for Wikidata edits to show up in the Wikipedias and made some progress. Daniel posted an analysis
    • We started running a script on the database in order to make search on Wikidata case-insensitive. This should be finished in a few days and then search should be more useful.
    • In addition to the above we have rolled out a new search box that suggests items. This should also make finding things on Wikidata a lot easier for you.
    • We’re making some progress with Internet Explorer 8 support but there are a lot of issues with it (some outside our control). It’s unclear at the moment how much we can improve it still without spending an unjustified amount of time on it. You can follow the progress at bugzilla:44228
    • Edits are now auto-confirmed for users with more than 50 edits and account age 4 days: bugzilla:46461
    • Do you need old-style interwiki links for a sister project for example? This is for you
    • The Wikimedia Foundation applied as a mentoring organisation for Google Summer of Code again. We have proposed some Wikidata projects for students to take up if the Foundation is accepted again. At least 2 other organisations that applied also propose Wikidata ideas. More details on that once we know which organisations are accepted.
    • Denny hacked together a tree of life based on data from Wikidata
    • Wikidata was added to wikipulse
    • A template to retrieve data from Wikidata if no local value is set

Questions about references

Stuart, I have added some various 3rd party references for my scratch page about the germania singing and sport society, I was curious if you could look them over and let me know if I was heading in the right direction? I've helped edit in the past, but never created a page from scratch, so I'm still very new to this. I've been reading the Wiki guide for new users and while I have gotten through much of it, I still have a ways to go before becoming Wiki adept. ANy advice or guidance is appreciated. Thank you

We're looking for long-form professional journalism with evidence of independent research or adversarial debate. These are still lacking from the article. Sorry for the PROD on the page. I didn't realize there was consensus within Wikipedia:WikiProject_New_Zealand that people with DNZB entries are notable. This should ideally be in the range of a few minutes. Right now it is higher because of some abnormally high bot activity but decreasing. Should be down to a few minutes soon.

In reference to the deleted article John Moulton (medical practitioner) I'm wondering if you might reconsider your opposition to this article. I have recently read WP:NRU and feel that it conclusively proves Moulton's notability for inclusion in Wikipedia. I hope you will agree and assist me in it being reinstated. As the team doctor he was an administrator of a "High Performance Union" for a long period and also at the time of winning the Rugby World Cup so he is clearly deemed notable by current standards. Second Twentieth Battalion

Thank you for your comments re my article on the 2/20 Battalion AIF, I have adjusted the opening paragraph so it is more obvious that the 2/20th raised in WWII is a different battalion from the 20th Battalion of WWI... the 2/20 was named after the 20th, even had the same colour patch, but they were different men fighting in a different war. It will hopefully happen very soon after that though.

Proposed deletion

I have concerns over your proposed deletion tagging of articles. Proposed deletion, as explained in the WP:PROD page is "a way to suggest an article for uncontroversial deletion". Many of the articles that you have recently tagged are clearly not uncontroversial deletion candidates, and as you have in some cases nominated several articles within the space of a minute, this suggests that you are not looking at them closely enough. In particular, please see the 'Before nomination' section and the instruction "Be sure you have a valid reason for deletion. Consider alternatives to deletion like merging or redirecting". I would also request that you at least undertake a Google search to see if there are sources available which could be used to address a lack of sources in the article, given that this has in many cases been you reason for deletion. You are strongly encouraged to use the "reason=" parameter to explain what is confusing for you, as it is recommended by Wiki-rules. If you have no reason, you should not confuse readers about confusing article.

Please, note also that marking sections or entire articles is undesirable.

However, I would not like to insist that the current version of the article is irreproachable, because the translation of the article was performed by me, and my skills in English is not excellent.

What else we can do?

The former text of the article Anatolii Alexeevitch Karatsuba (about one Russian mathematician) sutisfies to all Wikipedia requirement. This is an article about one of the best Russian mathematicians ever who invented first fast multiplication algorithm inplemented at present almost in all computers. He had a lot of other top level mathresults in number theory and some other fields. The article is well sourced. However SteveJ (administrotir) deleted the article and put his own text with one line which downplay the A.A. Karatsuba results only because of the reason that it doesn't correspond to his own view. Other administrators protected StevenJ variant (do not let us to revert our text) and wrote that we (who edited the text about A.A. Karatsuba) must come to consensus with Stevenj. However, he do not want any consensus on any conditions excluding his own text in three lines, one of them is very offensive for A.A. Karatsuba (everybody who knows about real facts can confirm it). What to do? Our discussion with him turned out to absurd because he pretends he does not see our sources (published by Springer papers in mathjournals), but as his sources quoted words of "notalble people" (by his opinion) but not publications. In his mathematical discussion he also plays unhonest game. He stated there is certain information in certain source, but when I read it, I didn't find this information there. It's only interpretation by Stevenj. Another unhonest way for mathdiscussion "to mix results", he speaks about DFT but not about FFT in such a way like this is the same. It's possible to continue such useless discussions unlimetly long preventing to revert the good text about A.A. Karatsuba.

We agree (see Talk page Anatolii Alexeevitch Karatsuba) to delete such claims in this article which very annoyed Stevenj (although they are right, and all explanations have been made to Stevenj, he rejected them bacause it doesn't correspond to some other Wikipedia texts which Stevenj created himself!). So we tried to state such a consensus deleting what Stevenj stated as "exaggerated claims". However, it is not enough for him. He simple don't want that any good text about A.A. Karatsuba would be. I will not mention "double standards": I edited some other Wikipedia texts about American mathematicians and never had problems like that with this paper about Russian mathematician.


What to do? How to block unhonest game of StevenJ? It has no any relation to Wikip[edia rules etc. It has relation only to the character of this person. Some time ago another editor of A.A. Karatsuba article had sharp discussion with Stevenj, so, as I believe, he decided to revenge. I repeat, this article correponds to all Wikipedia rules including the sourcing and notability guidelines. What to do in such situation?Mathtruth (talk) 10:57, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

A favor -Environmental law articles ready for preliminary review

Hi Stuartyeates. I see that you're an online ambassador. I'm the Professor for Aaron Frank's environmental law class, and while you're not signed up for my course, I was wondering if you'd be willing to take a look at any or all of the articles my students are working on. One of the aspects of this sort of course is that students understand that they are putting their work out before the wikipedia community for review. In the past, there hasn't been that much activity on their pages as they were working on them. I was hoping that if you were willing, you could take a look. If not, no problem.

The students now have draft articles in mainspace and are starting to review each other's articles, and they could also use a preliminary review by an experienced Wikipedian in this area. If you get a chance, ideally sometime before Thursday or so, please take a look at the following list of articles and leave feedback on the talk page:

I fully agree with Berstabit and NU DOE and User:Nemont, thank you to ElKevbo for finally deleting the Controversy section from the page, our prestigious university doesn't deserve these attacks on our reputation. Stuartyeates, I don't understand the attitude. I know how to write leads, and how to write WP:GAs and what it takes to write WP:FAs. And I'm the one who, yesterday (going by real time, not just Wikipedia time), mentioned at the Wikipedia:Education noticeboard that the Sexual cannibalism article needs cleanup. I was simply noting here at your talk page that you tagged that article as needing a lead. The tag you used is for articles that don't have leads, not for articles that have bad leads. We don't have a "bad lead" tag (yet anyway). Someone is bound to remove the tag you added, and I thought you'd added it by accident. Since you didn't, don't mind me.
